History (Page 1 of 2)

The first record of Wesleyans meeting in Whiston was in the diary of Rev. Charles Boon in 1771, the early meetings were held in Stanley Cottage on Hollowgate.

An extract from Rev. Boon’s Diary read:

“I am at Whiston every third Tuesday and there is an increase in both learners and members.”

In 1822 the Wesleyans built their first chapel on High Street. It wasn’t until 1866 that the present chapel building was built, on an enlarged site of the first, at a cost of £870 8s 6d. Thomas Hazlehurst of Runcorn laid the foundation of stone on Tuesday 18th April 1865.

The chapel had one large room fitted with a pulpit and pews.

Rev. Dr. Osborne, D.D., ex president of the Wesleyan Conference, opened the chapel on The 3rd April 1866.

An Extract from the Rotherham Advertiser on the 7th April 1866 read:

“The new Wesleyan Chapel, which has just been erected in the picturesque little village of Whiston, was consecrated last Wednesday for Divine Worship. The first sermons being preached by Rev. Dr. Osborne, ex president of the Wesleyan Conference. The chapel is very neat and pretty and fully bearing out the description of it at the time of the commencement of its erection. Dr Osborne was very much pleased with the structure of the building and surprised at its small cost. Both the sermons he preached were full of exceedingly appropriate character and were listened to with great attention by the good congregations, who had ventured out against unfavourable weather conditions. The collections on the day amounted to between £13 and £14. The opening services are to be continued tomorrow when the Rev. R. Thompson is to preach.”
